Hubby says "NO" to losing my horse

>> Dec 16, 2008

I talked to my husband about how to get by if he loses his hours at work and mentioned having to sell my horse. His immediate response was, "No, we are not selling her." Period.

I hope he doesn't get reduced to part-time. We have to keep our house and at least one car and utilities paid for heat/water/electricity. Part-time hours won't pay those bills. Those are necessities to keep our kids sheltered and taken care of.

I hope like crazy that my girl stays mine:( It'd rip my heart out to lose her.

Might Lose My Horse

>> Dec 14, 2008

My husband told me yesterday that the place where he works is cutting back almost everybody's hours from full-time to three days a week starting January 1. It doesn't affect his area (yet) but I can only imagine it will trickle down to him too sooner rather than later. We can't pay all our household bills if that happens.

I would have to sell my horse since I can't justify paying stable board if we can't pay our house payment to keep the roof over our four kids' heads. I can pay her bill right now with what I make but if hubby loses hours, I can't. It will tear my heart out if I have to sell her. Literally break it into two.

I am hoping my husband doesn't lose all his hours or else we are going to be in financial trouble (like a lot of people right now).

Come on economy, pick up!

Wagon Teamster Travels Thru

>> Dec 4, 2008

While out shopping this morning, I wasn't too suprised to see, going in the opposite direction, four horses pulling a wagon. Where we live, we see a lot of horses pulling buggies, however, unlike those, this one had a name and web site on it and it looked more like a small trailer type structure rather than the Amish wagons I am used to seeing. On the way back from shopping, I passed the four horses and wagon again. Hmm...so I thought I'd look them up online.

It turns out this team of horses is pulling a man cross country. His "wagon" is actually his home that he built himself. For pictures and more information about this team, check them out here.

How cool is that? I actually saw them today!!

Meet Tequila Sunrise

>> Nov 25, 2008

Three months ago, my daughter lost her horse unexpectedly. She was extremely upset. Our trainer offered to bring her broodmare (who she isn't breeding anymore), once she and baby were weaned, to the barn for the winter for my daughter to take care of and love. If they bond, she said that my daughter can have her. What a nice offer and nice thing to do.

So the horse came to the barn a few days ago and we went to spend some time with her. She was very attentive and loving. She nickered to us when we walked in the barn. She gave us her full attention the whole time we were there. We brushed her a bit and she loved that...she didn't want us to stop and kept pressing her side up against the stall gate closer to us to touch her. When we weren't by her stall, she was nickering again. I think they are going to end up loving each other.

So, because I am a photo nut, this is Tequila Sunrise with my smiling daughter:

My daughter said people keep asking her if she has a new horse yet and she tells them no. She asked me what she was supposed to tell them now. I told her to tell them she is taking care of a horse this winter but she doesn't have a horse yet. She asked me what she was supposed to say her name was (because it's an alcoholic drink, lol). I told her that I doubted her friends would know what that was (her name is what it is, lol). She said, "Yes they would. They know what pot is!" Oh boy.

She was very sweet:

Wishing

>> Nov 18, 2008

We really need another riding horse. My mare is too green to give us lessons on. Now that my 11yo is advancing in riding skill (and learning to jump which weakens my heart I'm sure, lol), she really need her own horse again to ride regularly. Plus, my 7yo daughter and 9yo son are ready to get on themselves. I talked to our trainer and we're going to toss them up in the saddle at the end of my 11yo daughter's lessons to start getting them used to being on a horse.

I wish Rex was still here:( He was such a fantastic horse and wonderfully, patient teacher.

I'm not sure what I am going to be riding. Ugh.

JeeNee Jumps Fence

>> Nov 3, 2008

JeeNee got excited last night and decided to do something she's never done before - jump a five-strand fence to get into the other pasture. She cleared it with her front legs and almost cleared it with her back. She hit above her hoof on the way over so she did cut herself but she didn't fall, get caught in the fence, or tear the fence down.

She almost cleared it. This is the first time she's ever done anything like this. I didn't think my moose of a horse would try to jump a fence!

There is no swelling and they aren't stalling her so she doesn't swell up. Hopefully, it doesn't swell and it'll heal without incident. When I heard she jumped a fence, my imagination imagined bad stuff and I think heart skipped a beat (or five) until I heard she was ok. After the phone call telling us Rex had died, I get a little nervous now I guess.

If you have read my previous posts about my daughter learning to jump, we knew she was going to need a jumper in the future to compete if that is what she wanted to do. Is my JeeNee my daughter's future jumper?

Happy Birthday to Me

Yesterday was my birthday. I turned 37. Ewww. I ran right out and bought a bunch of anti-wrinkle product for my face. Nope, I'm not paranoid about getting older. Yeah right.

Anyway, I've been trying to figure out what my husband bought me for my birthday (I had thought the printer he bought me last month was it but he wasn't done shopping yet which I found out last week). I knew where my other gift was coming from (Jeffers) so I knew it had something to do with horses. I asked him if it was for me or the horse. Hubby's answer after thinking about it: the horse. I asked him if it was for her a$$ half or her front half. Hubby's answer: her middle and it's something I need. Hmmm...so I'm thinking what don't I have already that I need for JeeNee? Maybe a western saddle pad because I need one of those. Then the box comes in and it's too small to be a western saddle pad. I'm back to not having a clue what it is.

I open my presents up last night and it's a new helmet with leather covering and stitching. It looks like a western helmet as opposed to the all white, shiny schooling helmet I've been using (that hubby had told me before was geeky but at the time, it was the only one I could find that felt like it fit right). My new helmet came with a bag to keep it in and a matching fleece jacket.

After opening it, I said, "I thought this was for the horse?" He said, "It is for JeeNee because you look like a geek riding on her back with your other helmet." Gosh, wouldn't want to embarrass my horse now. I laughed so hard. So, here is a picture. It's the chocolate brown one (not the one with pink on it but you can see the stitching to get an idea from the larger pink/black helmet:)

Since I am all about matching, I did recently see a black and brown western bridle on eBay that I will have to look for (yeah!) when I'm able to afford the bridle for her so everything matches her pretty black saddle. Apparently, JeeNee shouldn't be carrying anything on herself that makes her appear like she's hauling around a geek so my neurotic insistence on things matching is to her benefit - she has to keep up appearances ya know:) LOL. Now I am going to have to ride again soon before it gets too cold. I haven't rode since before Rex died. I still miss the big guy...it still catches me by surprise sometimes how much.

While on the birthday subject and back to happy stuff, here is the birthday cake my husband ordered for me. I haven't had a fun cake like this since I was a kid:)

My three-year-old was sitting next to me when I blew out the candles. I couldn't blow them all out with one breath (which got me teased by hubby...hey, give me a break - asthmatic here! lol). Apparently there was too much smoke when I blew them all out because my youngest started coughing and waving her hands around to clear the smoke...the lil turd.

My kids all made me cards. They were all sweet...how much they love me, telling me I'm a good mom, they appreciate what I do for them (I'm going to keep these so I can pull them out when they're teenagers and remember the good ole days), that I'm a cool mom, awesome, etc. My son made me one of those flippy books so if you flip thru it quickly, it looks like a movie scene. It was of me and him getting closer and closer thru the book and the last page was of us hugging. It was adorable. They sung me songs too. I didn't hear from my stepkids (it would tick their mother off if they acknowledged me so I wasn't expecting it if they did remember, which wasn't likely) so no big surprise there. It wasn't going to mess up my day. My kids and hubby did a great job of celebrating my birthday yesterday. I have very thoughtful kids and hubby.

Horse Updates

>> Oct 8, 2008

More progress! While my daughter is just learning to go over cross rails, I am beginning to think I should get a prescription for valium or something, lol. Are all moms nervous when their child starts to learn to jump?

Right now, it's more of a trot/hop over and it's not too bad but once she starts REALLY soaring over those rails, I am probably going to alternate between wanting to be sick to being really proud of her!

As far as my girl, with the cooler weather coming in, she's gotten feisty! The Draft in her likes this weather. I watched her lunge last week (before the flu hit our house) and she definitely was full of it. She was beautiful (but I sure as hell wouldn't have gotten on her back at that time, lol).

Successful Ride Today

>> Sep 21, 2008

Well, the ride didn't happen the other day like planned for my daughter (see previous post). It was rescheduled. It happened today instead. I wondered if it would bring more tears, but it went better than I expected.

My daughter was a bit nervous about riding a different horse, since Rex died, but she did great. She walk, trot, cantered our trainer's horse around. She was subdued throughout the ride until the end (what brought out a smile is in the next paragraph). She told me afterward that she felt a bit guilty every time she saw Rex's tree (where he is buried) out in the hay field. She said she thought he was watching her riding a different horse out there from the hay field or in the arena with them. (I told her Rex would want her to be happy and riding again.)

She also had another first. She took the horse over rails today - three times actually. Cross rails? (I'm not a jumper if you can't tell.) The first two times, the rails came down but by the third time, they were hopping over it and she had a BIG smile on her face after that. That brought a smile out.

She said she still isn't ready to have another horse right now of her own but she does get to take care of one of our trainer's horses over the winter which she is thrilled about. If they bond, this mare may end up being hers so having the winter to bond (and have the pain of losing Rex diminish a bit) will be good for her.

This last month has been very sad and still brings tears at times. However, she left the stable today ready to start lessons again. She didn't want to leave the stable today whereas at other times this past month, she wanted to leave and usually left crying.

So I will share some pictures with you of her first ride after losing her horse, Rex, a month ago today. This was the horse a little over a year ago that she couldn't get to do anything for her because she didn't have any confidence riding and he knew it. Look at her now after Rex instilled in her the confidence to enjoy riding:

Riding Again After Death of Horse

>> Sep 18, 2008

Tonight my daughter will ride again for the first time since her best friend, her horse Rex, died last month. It's been almost a month since we lost him unexpectedly (see posts about Rex below these). I have mixed feelings about tonight. I want her to get back on and move forward because losing Rex was so very hard for my daughter and I don't want her to lose the confidence her gave her, but my heart still has a hole in it from losing Rex so it will be very sad at the same time to see her for the first time on another horse.

Our trainer is going to put her on one of her own horses. In another week or so, she will bring down one of her mares to the farm (weaning mommy and baby) and Bree will take care of her over the winter. She is really looking forward to that.

Rex's Memorial

>> Aug 27, 2008

I finished Rex's memorial page online today. It was so difficult to get through. I had actually started it a couple days ago but it was too hard so I stopped. I finished it tonight and it broke my heart all over again.

I miss him so much. I cried when I received the phone call from the stable, I cried on the drive there, and I cried petting my mare after I got there. After that, shock hit and I had to be strong for my daughter so other than tears on my face while holding her, I guess I didn't get enough of my grief out because after I finished his memorial page, I sobbed the messy, loud kind of crying that I haven't done in such a long time.

This is killing me not knowing why he died. I didn't want an autopsy done because I didn't want them taking his body and not getting it back (and having my daughter left with that last thought in her mind with her horse), I didn't want somebody who didn't know or love him to treat him indifferently and destroy his beautiful body, and I wanted him to be buried with some dignity because he was that kind of horse. The result of that is that it leaves me with questions and it hurts.

Rex died sometime on late Wednesday night/Thurday morning a week ago...a week ago from now, on this night. The depth of grief is just miserable.

RIP Sweet Rex

My daughter's horse died the night before last. He was her best friend. Rex pulled her out of herself when she was going thru some bad times earlier this year and became her best friend. He taught her a lot. She learned to canter with him. She rode bareback for the first time two days before he passed away. He gave her the confidence she had been lacking and the best friend she needed during hard times. Maybe that was why he was with us, to help her, though it was for far too short of a time. I will forever be grateful for what he did for her. I just wish we'd had longer to love him in life.

He wasn't just a pet to us. He had a part of our heart and our hearts broke when he passed away unexpectedly.

She sure enjoyed her sponge bath afterward!

My daughter took the pictures of me on her. She got a close up of me getting off of her but I'll spare everybody that one:)

This morning, I went back to the stable so our trainer could show me how to longe her myself. We took her into the arena she is used to and I longed her. She was great. No tantrums today.

Horse Breeding

>> Jul 9, 2008

My spotted draft has a great disposition and is very easily trained. She's wonderful and quite striking. She would have awesome babies. I don't know if I will ever breed her though. I am not sure if that is selfish on my part - not giving her a chance to have her own - or if horses care one way or the other at all. My reason for not wanting to breed her is that I am too afraid I would lose her. I have read some sad stories of mares lost during birthing and I don't want to risk it. Would I be depriving her? I guess the only one who could really tell me is my girl and since I'm not a Horse Whisperer, I can't know the answer to that.

Mom's Time

>> Jul 6, 2008

Well, as I posted about the other day, this momma was going to take some time for herself which I did.

I had a riding lesson on Rex and spent a few hours down at the stable - no kids. I rode until Sexy Rexy was getting tired and it was time to cool him down, love on him and let him go back to his pasture. He was a great guy - he is a horse that really takes care of you. He doesn't act silly or spooky. He's very steady.

Next week, I am going to sit on my filly for the first time ever. We've had her a couple years but she's not been ready for riding yet. We had to give her growth plates time. I want a horse taught slow and right, not broke fast and hard and then ruined in a few years. Anyway, I am hoping to get a picture of that. I can't wait!

Our trainer, who is wonderful, is training her in exchange for my keeping up their rescue web site. I appreciate that so much because she is doing an awesome job with JeeNee and I enjoy helping in what little way I can with their rescue efforts for the thoroughbreds. JeeNee is going to be a great riding horse. Our trainer told me yesterday that she was going to continue to work with her a few days a week for the rest of the year! How wonderful is that?

Of course, I came home to a frazzled husband after having the four kids to watch for a couple hours. Our three year old was in one of her toddler moods so he had his hands full. I wanted to say, "welcome to my world" but I held my tongue, lol.

Taking Time for Myself

>> Jul 2, 2008

I have my lesson on Saturday. It's been a few weeks since I've rode and I am excited to leave the kids at home with dad and go to the barn for my de-stressing time. It always makes me feel better to go to the barn and see the horses and after this past week with the kids (it's been one of those weeks), I am welcoming the time for myself on Saturday.

I think moms need to take more time for themselves. I know I don't but I should. I feel guilty when I do but I really shouldn't. I deserve to have a little time to myself. I only take it now ever few weeks and realistically, I should carve that time out to myself on a weekly basis.

She is Looking Like a Natural

My daughter had another lesson on Rex yesterday. She is looking like a natural. I didn't see any of the fear or anxiety on her face. I did see a lot of smiling! She was cantering and moving into posting when he slowed to a trot. Our trainer left her longe whip at the barn on purpose so my daughter would have no choice but to keep him going herself and she did. She was having a good ole time! It's a good thing our trainer took down the jumps though because she's eyeing them. The rails were laying flat on the ground and she was walking him over them. I know she's going to want to jump in the future. I can see it in her face.

He's Gone

Jack went to his new home today to be a trail horse again. The kids and I went to the stable today to say our good-byes to him before he left.

I brushed him out good so he would look pretty for his new little owner when he came off the trailer. He enjoys being brushed and didn't mind my kisses on his nose.

I had three girls sobbing when he walked onto the trailer. Even the three year old was crying, which I didn't expect. It was a teary ride for us leaving the stable today.

He made the trip fine and he is now at his new home about 2-1/2 hours away, but it will be hard to go to the stable tomorrow and not see him at the gate waiting for us to come see him like he always did. It clenches my stomach to think of him nervous and wondering what the hell happened at his new home right now. I wonder if he's wondering where we are? He'll adjust like he did when we bought him but it's hard to think about right now. We'll adjust to:(

My daughter is quite proud of herself. She cantered for the first time. For a girl who has spent so much time full of anxiety and fear, not just over horses but other things in life, this was a huge accomplishment for her.

I thought I had it all videotaped too. I had the zoom in too close though and trying to use my digital camera for videos like that didn't work. The picture quality was terrible so I won't post them here. However, I will definitely take my real video camera for her next lesson to catch it. She had such a huge smile on her face!

Looks Like He's Almost Sold

It is looking more and more definite that Jack has found his new home. We have the deposit and we have the vet check. We are just waiting for the coggins results to come back, which should be in a couple days. His new owner will be a little girl who rode him very well. She is a confident rider. Jack seemed to really like her and her mom. He was the perfect gentleman for them and very adorable - even licking their hands like a puppy, lol.

It's going to be a very sad day when Jack pulls out of the stable that last time to go to his new home. It is a couple hours away so I can't drive by to see him or anything like that. I will likely never see him again. I hope his new owners will email me pictures now and then. I'm afraid I am going to turn into a blithering, sobbing idiot.

Jack is going back to do what he did before we bought him - ride the trails. He will be happier doing that I believe.

He's bonded strongly to my daughter (he was her horse)...that's the two of them in the picture. It'll be a sad day for all of us. I'm afraid I got too attached to the little guy. I hope in some way he understands that he'll be happier this way.

Riding Progress for Mom

>> May 30, 2008

Progress...at last! This ole mom is beginning to feel like I made it over a small hurdle. I've been taking riding lessons the past two years on and off (which is part of the problem...not being consistent). The other problems: the horse I was on and my neurotic fear (of broken bones, death, etc...is there an "etc" after death, lol). Now we have the perfect horse for lessons; he is steady, consistent, and has a huge heart and things are achangin' for us riding-wise! His name is Rex.

A few weeks ago during a lesson, I was trotting on Rex (if you know me, this is a big deal for me). There was some bouncing but I was getting more comfortable at it and getting less air between my saddle and my backside. I have to remember to keep my heels down and not tense my legs up too (this is my own personal reminder so don't mind me)! Anyhoo, I felt better about myself after this lesson.

Then, we go on vacation last week and hubby and I go on a trail ride (our first time alone together without kids in well over a year). It was an hour long and it was just the guide, hubby, and me. My horse was used to being the guide's horse but he was mine on that day because they are training a new horse for guiding. Well, Clever (that's the name of my horse), wasn't happy about that and kept trying to trot to the front of the line. Guess he thought he was clever (ok, bad joke). I kept him from getting around the other horse on my own each time...not one bit of help from the guide. (Bit of a confidence boost there.) He also kept kicking at flies with his back legs. The first time bumped me up a bit but after that, I was prepared. By the end of this trail ride, I was sore but I felt good about the ride itself.

Fast forward to yesterday - my next lesson. Yesterday's lesson was me riding Rex where I wanted, at a walk or a trot, on my own. Our trainer was there off to the side as a guide if I needed her but this was the first time she wasn't in the middle of the arena pushing me along. I did more trotting yesterday than I think I ever have. I also trotted on turns by the end without any problem (nobody wants to see mom plop out of her saddle on a turn anyway and kiss the sand, lol). She is "training" me so that by this summer, I can ride Rex whenever I want to instead of just during lessons so we get a lot more riding time in.

I am trying to make it easier on Rex by dropping 15-20 pounds. I am not hugely overweight (just a little bit), but I am packing a few extra lbs. that I would like to lose (for myself mostly but he'll get the benefit as well, lol). He is a big guy (16H or more) so it's not like he can't carry me easily bit it's incentive for me to lose a little weight anyway.

That's another thing - I am usually afraid of larger horses. I see visions of being trampled by huge horses (probably because that is what my clyde cross tried to do to me once last spring, lol). Rex is a big guy and I can ride him and not feel any fear at all over his size. I don't even think about it when I am on his back. He is such a good boy!

So, yeah, for this green ole mom!!
