I need a new camera to take to the stable for horse pictures so I am looking for some good daily deals. I have a SLR digital camera already but I wanted one that doesn't cost as much as that one did to take to the stable to use regularly. I'm not crazy about taking my expensive camera down to the barn where kids and dust reign. I usually use my daughter's camera during her lessons but that's been getting goofy lately and if that is going on the fritz, I am going to need a replacement.
I'd feel naked without a camera. I am always taking pictures (which my stepson really hates but gotta preserve the memories)!
Last year, on August 21, 2008, my daughter's heart broke when her horse, Rex, died unexpectedly. It was devastating to her to lose him. She'd been through some rough times in the previous year and she came out of it with her strong bond with Rex. She was happy again with Rex. Rex had such a personality that I wondered if there'd be another horse with so much character.
It's been nine months since Rex passed and she's been riding Tequila this year, our trainer's mare. They've been learning together (Tequila hasn't had formal training as she'd been a broodmare previously but she has such an easy going personality that it didn't seem to matter). The extent of Tequila's riding experience was when the girls at the stable would jump on her bareback with just a lead rope and ride her around in a parking lot at a show (she's great at shows for halter). Tequila wasn't going to have anymore babies so it was time for her to become a riding horse.
Bree has been the one riding her...first on a lunge line with the trainer and then, quicker than I expected, on her own. I didn't realize it until last week but Bree has been the only one to ride her for training. It's a great accomplishment for my daughter. As expected, Tequila was easily trained for riding and my daughter can now say she helped "break" a horse for riding ("break" isn't the right word...Tequila wants to do what you want her to do). They bonded beautifully.
Tequila is a unique horse in her own, funny way. I'm working on the video to post here to show you what I mean (she's hilarious). You'll have to check out the video when I get it posted.
Anyway, the point of all of this (sorry, I got to rambling), is that Tequila's owner (our trainer) gave Tequila to Bree after her lesson this past Wednesday. Tequila Sunrise is now Bree's horse. She was finally ready for another horse and now she has one to love again. They work well together and love each other. Here they are:
In June, they will go to their first horse show together for halter.
My daughter rode a different horse for the first time the other day. She took a lesson with my stepdaughter who was here on Spring Break. My stepdaughter rode our trainer's horse and my daughter rode a horse that belongs to another girl at the stable. She is well-trained and sweet to ride. It was good for my daughter to ride something different. She learns something new every time she does this. The lesson went well but she missed Tequila so her next lesson will be on Tequila.

Read more...Well, the ride didn't happen the other day like planned for my daughter (see previous post). It was rescheduled. It happened today instead. I wondered if it would bring more tears, but it went better than I expected.
My daughter was a bit nervous about riding a different horse, since Rex died, but she did great. She walk, trot, cantered our trainer's horse around. She was subdued throughout the ride until the end (what brought out a smile is in the next paragraph). She told me afterward that she felt a bit guilty every time she saw Rex's tree (where he is buried) out in the hay field. She said she thought he was watching her riding a different horse out there from the hay field or in the arena with them. (I told her Rex would want her to be happy and riding again.)
She also had another first. She took the horse over rails today - three times actually. Cross rails? (I'm not a jumper if you can't tell.) The first two times, the rails came down but by the third time, they were hopping over it and she had a BIG smile on her face after that. That brought a smile out.
She said she still isn't ready to have another horse right now of her own but she does get to take care of one of our trainer's horses over the winter which she is thrilled about. If they bond, this mare may end up being hers so having the winter to bond (and have the pain of losing Rex diminish a bit) will be good for her.
This last month has been very sad and still brings tears at times. However, she left the stable today ready to start lessons again. She didn't want to leave the stable today whereas at other times this past month, she wanted to leave and usually left crying.
So I will share some pictures with you of her first ride after losing her horse, Rex, a month ago today. This was the horse a little over a year ago that she couldn't get to do anything for her because she didn't have any confidence riding and he knew it. Look at her now after Rex instilled in her the confidence to enjoy riding:
